portrait session competition

By introducing your Facebook friends to the Polly Street Facebook page both you and your friend can win a portrait photo session (a saving of $150).

All you need to do is head over to Facebook, “Like” the page if you haven’t already done so and then “Suggest” it to your photo loving friends. All new fans of the page automatically go into the draw to win. If the winner was suggested by a Polly Street fan that person then also wins too. So the more people you ask the more chances you have of winning :)

Good luck!

NB: Entries close 5PM Tuesday 7th September 2010. Prize entitles the winner to a 2hr portrait session with a maximum of 5 people. Shoot will take place within the Sydney metro area. As a condition of the prize, winners will need to sign a release allowing the images to be used for marketing purposes. Photo prints & products can then be purchased separately.

using a flash outdoors on a sunny day

A flash on a sunny day… not what you’d usually think of doing. But in some circumstances it might dramatically improve your photo.

This is a very simple example of how using a flash can help you out of a tricky photo situation. I’d normally move the subject, open up the aperture of my lens and/or use a reflector if faced with difficult lighting. I’m not a big fan of the flash normally. However not everyone’s camera can manually control aperture settings plus with some events we just can’t move people around… imagine trying to move a group of kids to the best lighting position at a sports carnival or birthday party. It ain’t going to happen :) Here is when fill flash can solve some of your lighting problems and lift the picture quality.

This works in particular when you are dealing with back lighting or if there are strong shadows thrown onto your subject’s face. But before you go wild using your flash I’d suggest you go into your camera’s settings and dial down its strength. Most cameras these days let you set your flash output and this will ensure you aren’t throwing out too much light.

The two images below were photographed using the auto settings, just like a regular point and shoot. As you can see the second image with the flash there are less dark shadows on the face and it is a clearer record of the moment. Good luck with experimenting!

high school buddy

Love it when work & play collide… Last week I got to catch up with a lovely old school friend who I haven’t seen for years as she lives in New Zealand. Louise runs a busy chiropractic business and is also writing a book. She needed new photos for both and it was awesome to be involved. What fun!

kylie’s autumn family portraits

I recently caught up with my gorgeous old friend Kylie and her fabulous kids amongst the golden colours of autumn. What a stunning afternoon! When I was at uni I had the pleasure of photographing Kylie’s wedding (my first ever wedding shoot armed with my grandfather’s old manual focus camera).

17 years and 4 kids later we decided it was time to get together and capture some new memories. Enjoy the photos Kylie… Love to you all!

PS Kylie has kindly emailed me a favourite photo from her wedding which I’ve added below. Hard to believe that this was 17 years ago.

family beachside fun

On a beautiful sunny April day we got to hang out at the beach with this fun loving family. Melissa was the winner of my Mother’s Day competition and these photos were perfect timing to capture a major turning point in their lives. Katie, her youngest, has thankfully just finished a two year battle with cancer.

As Melissa explains “Thanks Fiona for a fantastic collection of family photos – a great Mother’s Day present. We had so much fun doing the shoot with you and Charlie – who’d of thought we’d all scrub up so well :) You’ve documented a special time for us – Katie turns 4 next month and May will also mark the closure (happy ending) of almost… two years for Katie of surgery and chemotherapy treatment for some pesky brain tumours relating to her genetic disorder NF1″.

I’m so glad my hubby and I got to spend a wonderful morning with you all. All the best for continued good health. You guys ROCK!

wedding day: emma+james

What a fabulous day! The rain thankfully held off and we were treated to divine celebrations by Sydney Harbour. I first met Emma & James for their engagement shoot and knew that they would have a fun & joyful wedding. They were both so relaxed and laughed their way through the shoot.

Their wedding service was held on the lawns of picturesque Athol Hall. And a personal touch was that they were married by James’ father, a Uniting Church Minister. We then took some photos by the water before joining the guests for a cocktail reception. Emma’s cheeky personality shone when it came to the bridal waltz… rather the bridal line dance. It was hilarious and my new all time favourite wedding dance… Enjoy the photos!

Gorgeous dress: Mariana Hardwick | Beautiful venue: Athol Hall
Fab 2nd shooter: Lauren Walker | Soulful music: Virna Sanzone
